You are halfway along a fence line, the grass is thick, and your whipper snipper suddenly stops feeding. Again. So, why does trimmer line jam when the job is finally moving? Usually, it is not one big failure. It is a mix of overheated nylon, poor line loading, a dirty head or a spool system that was built to be fiddly from the start.

A jammed trimmer head wastes more than line. It breaks your rhythm, turns a quick edge-up into a workshop job, and leaves you pulling apart parts that should simply work. The good news is most jams have a clear cause. Once you know what to look for, you can prevent plenty of them before they start.

Why Does Trimmer Line Jam in the Head?

Trimmer line needs room to move, a clean path to exit, and the right amount of tension inside the head. Take away any one of those things and the line can weld itself together, tangle around the spool or refuse to feed through the eyelets.

Traditional bump-feed heads are especially prone to trouble because they rely on tightly wound line being released in small increments. Dirt gets in, line overlaps, the spool heats up, and suddenly the whole setup locks itself into a knot.

The line has overheated and fused together

Nylon line gets hot when it cuts. That is normal. But long, hard runs in heavy grass, repeated contact with concrete, or holding the head too close to a fence can create enough heat to soften the line inside the spool. When hot nylon presses against itself, it can fuse together.

The next time you bump the head or try to feed more line, it will not move. You may pull out a short, flattened section that looks melted or has sharp kinks in it.

A neat spool matters. If line crosses over itself while being wound, the upper layers can pinch the lower layers. The line might look fine until it is time to advance it. Then it catches under a crossed section and jams solid.

Overfilling is just as common. Cramming extra line onto a spool sounds efficient, but it leaves no room for the line to release cleanly. The spool becomes tight, the line binds, and feeding turns into a fight.

If you use a wound-spool head, follow its fill limit and wind the line evenly in the direction marked on the spool. Keep firm tension while loading, but do not pull it drum-tight. A clean, controlled wind beats a packed spool every time.

The wrong line size is causing drag

Not every trimmer head is designed for every line diameter. Line that is too thick can drag through the eyelets, wedge between the spool and housing, or overload the feed mechanism. Line that is too thin can double back, tangle more easily and wear out fast.

Check what your head and machine can handle before fitting a new roll. This matters even more with petrol trimmers, where extra cutting load can put unnecessary strain on the clutch and drive system. Bigger is not always better. The right line for the grass, head and machine is better.

Dirt and grass are blocking the feed path

Fine dust, wet clippings and bits of broken line build up inside a trimmer head over time. Add a little grease, moisture or mud from a lifestyle block, and that mess turns into a sticky paste. It can stop the spool spinning freely or clog the eyelets where the line exits.

A blocked eyelet is easy to miss. The line may feed a few millimetres, then stick. If the opening is worn, rough or packed with debris, the nylon catches instead of sliding through.

After a tough session, remove the head cover and knock out loose rubbish. Wipe away wet grass before putting the trimmer in the shed. Check the eyelets for packed debris and rough edges. That two-minute habit can save a full reload next weekend.

Damp, old or poor-quality nylon is harder to manage

Line does not last forever. Nylon stored in direct sun, left on a hot garage shelf or exposed to moisture can become brittle, swollen or inconsistent. It may snap often, stick in the head or feel oddly rough as it feeds.

Store spare line somewhere cool, dry and out of sunlight. Keep it in its packaging or a sealed container rather than loose in the back of the ute. If a roll has been sitting around for years and keeps giving you grief, replacing it is often cheaper than wasting another hour on jams.

Fast Checks When Your Whipper Snipper Line Stops Feeding

Switch the trimmer off, let the head stop completely and disconnect the spark plug lead before opening a petrol unit. A trimmer head is no place for shortcuts.

Start by pulling out the line ends. If they will not move with steady pressure, do not yank harder. Open the head and look for fused sections, crossed line or clumps of grass. Remove damaged nylon rather than trying to save every last metre. A short offcut is not worth another jam five minutes later.

Then inspect the exit points. Clear dirt from the eyelets and make sure the line can slide through without catching. Turn the spool by hand. It should rotate and release smoothly, not feel gritty or tight.

Stop Trimmer Line Jams Before They Start

Good trimming technique makes a real difference. Keep the head moving and cut with the tip of the line rather than smashing the full length into every weed. Work through tall grass in passes, especially around drains, fence posts and rough ground. Taking the top off first reduces heat and load on the line.

Avoid running flat-out against hard surfaces for long periods. Concrete edging, pavers and corrugated fencing chew through nylon quickly, creating heat and short line ends that are more likely to pull back into the head. A controlled angle gives you a cleaner edge and less line waste.

It also pays to match the line shape to the work. Round line is generally forgiving for everyday grass. Profiles with sharper edges can cut more aggressively, but they may wear faster against hard surfaces. Heavy brush and thick grass may call for a stronger cutting setup, while tidy lawn edges do not need the same brute force.

Most of all, do not ignore early warning signs. If feeding starts to feel sticky, line breaks too close to the head, or you hear the spool rattling differently, stop and check it before it becomes a full jam. Small maintenance beats a stripped-down repair.

When the Head Design Is the Real Problem

Sometimes the line is not the real issue. The head is. A conventional wound spool has multiple points where line can cross, bind, melt or get trapped. Even careful loading cannot fully remove that risk when the design depends on tightly packed nylon releasing under vibration and heat.
