A fresh length of line should not disappear after one pass along the fence. If you are asking why trimmer line breaks, the answer is usually not that your whipper snipper is underpowered. More often, the line, head setup and cutting method are working against each other.
A bit of wear is normal. Line is meant to sacrifice itself while it cuts grass and weeds. Constant snapping, however, turns a quick tidy-up into a stop-start chore. Find the cause, make one or two practical changes, and you will spend more time cutting and less time feeding line.
Why trimmer line breaks so often
Trimmer line breaks when it hits something harder than the vegetation you are cutting. Concrete edging, fence posts, rocks, corrugated iron, wire and tree roots can all chew through nylon in seconds. That is part of the job near boundaries, but it should not be happening across an open lawn.
The most common causes are using line that is too light for the job, running it too long, loading it poorly, or using a worn or unsuitable trimmer head. Technique matters too. A whipper snipper is not a brush hook or a demolition tool. Driving the line hard into solid edges will burn through it quickly, regardless of how tough the nylon claims to be.
There is also a difference between line that breaks at the tip and line that snaps close to the head. Tip wear points to normal impact, poor technique or the wrong line profile. Breaks near the head often point to line pinching, overheating, a damaged eyelet, or line that has become brittle in storage.
Start with the right line for the job
Thin, round line is fine for soft lawn edges and light weeds. It is not the best choice for waist-high grass, woody weeds or an overgrown fenceline. When the line is too thin, it flexes excessively, loses cutting force and breaks sooner. Going thicker can help, provided your machine and head are designed to run it.
Profile matters as well. Round line is generally durable and forgiving around hard surfaces. Square, twisted or serrated profiles can cut heavier grass more aggressively, but sharp-edged profiles may wear faster when they repeatedly strike concrete and stone. There is no single best line for every property. The right choice depends on whether you are edging a neat lawn or clearing rough growth around a shed, gate or paddock fence.
Do not assume thicker is always better. Oversized line puts more load on the engine, reduces revs and can make feeding harder. Check the recommended line diameter for your trimmer and head, then choose a line suited to the work you actually do.
Do not run more line than you need
Longer line looks useful, but it can be a waste of power. As line gets longer, the tip speed and load increase. The engine works harder, the line flexes more, and it is more likely to strike hard objects unexpectedly. A line that extends too far past the guard can also vibrate, fray and snap.
Use the cutter on the safety guard to keep the line at the correct working length. If your trimmer does not have one, follow the head manufacturer’s recommended length. Trim line should be long enough to cut efficiently, not so long that it turns into a floppy, fuel-hungry mess.
If one side is consistently longer than the other, stop and correct it. Uneven line causes vibration, makes the head harder to control and can shake line loose or create extra stress at the exit points.
Check how the line is loaded
Traditional spool heads can create plenty of trouble before you even pull the starter cord. Line crossed over itself, wound too tightly, loaded in the wrong direction or packed beyond the spool capacity may not feed cleanly. It can bind inside the head, then release in jerks. That sudden pull puts strain on the line and can snap it near the eyelet.
If your head uses a winding system, keep the wraps neat and do not force in extra metres just to avoid reloading later. A slightly smaller amount of properly loaded line is far more useful than a jammed spool full of tangled nylon.

Inspect the trimmer head, eyelets and guard
The small metal or plastic openings where line leaves the head do a lot of work. These eyelets guide the line at high speed, and they take repeated impact from dust, grit and vibration. If an eyelet is worn sharp, cracked or clogged with melted nylon, it can cut into the line every time the head spins.
Turn the trimmer off, disconnect the spark plug lead where appropriate, and inspect the head before chasing bigger problems. Look for rough edges, broken sections, packed-in grass, melted plastic and damage around the line exits. Replace worn parts or the whole head if it is no longer holding line securely.
Also check the guard. A missing or damaged guard is not only a safety problem. It leaves the line without a proper length cutter and makes it easier to run excessive line. Keep the guard fitted and clear of built-up clippings.
Use the cutting technique that saves line
The fastest way to destroy line is to attack hard edges at full throttle and keep forcing the head into them. Instead, let the outer tip of the line do the cutting. Work in a controlled sweep and take lighter passes around concrete, timber and stone.
For heavy grass, do not bury the head in the whole clump at once. Start at the top of tall growth and work down in layers. This reduces bogging and stops long grass from wrapping around the shaft or head. It also gives the line room to cut rather than dragging and tearing.
When edging beside a driveway or footpath, hold the head so the line just kisses the edge. You are cutting grass, not grinding the concrete. A clean edge may take two steady passes, but it will use far less nylon than one aggressive pass.
Slow down near wire, old posts and hidden rubbish. Rural sections and lifestyle blocks often have surprises hiding in long grass: broken fencing, rocks, irrigation gear, bits of metal and old plastic. These are hard on line and can be dangerous when struck at speed.
Moisture, heat and old nylon matter
Nylon line does not stay perfect forever. Line that has sat for years in a hot shed, baked in direct sun or been stored poorly can become dry and brittle. Brittle line snaps more readily, especially close to the head where it bends sharply under load.
Keep spare line in a sealed container out of direct sunlight. If the line feels stiff, chalky or cracks when bent, replace it. Some users lightly recondition dry nylon by storing it in a sealed bag with a little moisture for a day or two, but do not soak it or use line that is visibly damaged. Fresh, properly stored line is the more reliable option when you have a big job waiting.
Heat generated during use can cause trouble too. If line repeatedly melts or fuses inside the head, it may be loaded too tightly, the head may be clogged, or you may be running at high speed without enough cutting work to cool things down. Stop, clear the buildup and reload correctly rather than forcing the mechanism.
Match the tool to tough growth
A line trimmer is brilliant for grass, weeds, edges and light brush. It has limits. Thick woody stems, dense blackberry-type growth and hard scrub can consume line quickly, even with a heavy-duty setup. In some cases, a brush-cutting blade or another suitable tool is the safer, more economical choice.
That does not mean you need a different tool every time grass gets long. It means being realistic about the growth in front of you. Use a suitable heavy-duty line and cutting profile for tough grass, work in layers, and avoid smashing into hidden obstacles. Your trimmer will run better and your line will last longer.
