A trimmer that suddenly stops feeding line halfway along the fence line is enough to test anyone’s patience. When you need to remove melted trimmer line, the job is usually less about brute force and more about finding out why the line fused in the first place. Clear it properly now and you are far less likely to be pulling the head apart again next weekend.
Melted line is common when a whipper snipper head gets hot, the line is wound too tightly, or the nylon is being worked harder than it was designed for. It can happen on a quick tidy-up around the lawn, but it is more likely when tackling long grass, thick weeds, wiregrass or rough ground around a lifestyle block.
Stop the trimmer before touching the head
Turn the trimmer off, let the cutting head come to a complete stop, and disconnect the spark plug lead before working on a petrol machine. This is not a step to skip. A head can spin unexpectedly if the engine is bumped or the throttle catches.
Give the head time to cool too. Melted nylon and the metal drive area can both hold heat after a hard run. Put on gloves and eye protection before you start. Small pieces of brittle line can flick out when you prise apart a spool or cover.
You will usually only need a flat screwdriver, pliers, a utility knife and a clean rag. A small brush helps if the head is packed with dry grass, dust and mud.
How to remove melted trimmer line from the head
Start by removing the cutting head cover or taking the head off the trimmer, following the instructions for your particular model. Some bump-feed heads have clips on the side of the cap, while others need the spool or retaining nut removed first. Work over a clear patch of concrete, a bench or the tailgate of the ute so springs, washers and small parts do not disappear into the grass.
Once the spool is exposed, look for the point where the line has fused. Sometimes only the outer few turns are melted together. Other times the line has formed a hard plastic lump around the exit eyelet, spool channel or centre of the head.
Pull away any loose line first. If it is tightly stuck, use pliers to grip a short end and gently work it back and forth. Do not yank hard enough to crack the spool. Plastic spools become brittle with age, sun exposure and repeated heat cycles, and a cracked spool is not worth putting back into service.
For a solid melted section, carefully cut the nylon into smaller pieces with a utility knife. Slice away from your body and keep the blade clear of the plastic spool wherever possible. The aim is to relieve pressure on the fused section, not carve up the head.
A flat screwdriver can help lift softened nylon out of the spool grooves. Use light pressure. If the line has melted onto the spool itself, scrape off the residue until the grooves are clean and smooth. Any rough plastic edge left behind can catch fresh line and start another jam.
Pay close attention to the eyelets or line outlets. These are often where heat and friction build up. Remove every bit of nylon trapped in the opening, then wipe out dust and grass seed with a rag. If the eyelet is badly grooved, distorted or missing, replace it if your head allows. A damaged outlet can chew through line and make feeding unreliable.
Before reassembling, check the spring, spool, cap and locking tabs for wear. If the cap no longer clips in firmly, the spool is warped, or the line channels are melted out of shape, replacement is the sensible call. Forcing a worn head to keep going usually turns a five-minute fix into a frustrating afternoon.
Why trimmer line melts and jams
Nylon line creates heat every time it rubs through an eyelet, strikes hard edges or drags against the inside of a conventional wound spool. A little heat is normal. Trouble starts when that heat combines with friction, poor line loading or a head packed with debris.
The most common cause is overfilling the spool. More line might seem useful, but packing it in tightly gives the coils nowhere to move. As the head heats up, the nylon softens and neighbouring coils fuse together. The line then will not feed when you tap the head, even though there is plenty left inside.
Incorrect line diameter causes problems too. Line that is thicker than the head is designed to handle can bind in the channels and drag at the outlets. Line that is too thin may feed poorly, snap more easily and wind itself into a messy tangle. Check the trimmer head’s recommended line size before loading it.
Working at full throttle into heavy scrub for long periods can also melt line quickly. Full power has its place, especially in dense grass, but keep the head moving and avoid holding it in one spot. Let the tips do the cutting. Ramming the head into woody weeds, concrete edging, fence posts or rocks creates harsh friction and heat.
Old or low-quality nylon is another culprit. Line that has sat exposed in a shed, vehicle tray or direct sun can become dry and brittle. It may break repeatedly, then stick or melt inside the head. Store spare line sealed and out of direct sunlight. If it feels stiff, chalky or cracks when bent, bin it.
Reload the head without creating another blockage
With the melted line cleared, reload carefully. If you use a traditional spool, do not wind line to the absolute limit. Leave enough room for it to move freely. Wind it evenly in the correct direction, keep light tension on the line, and make sure the two ends are seated correctly before closing the head.
Avoid crossing coils where possible. Crossed line can bite into itself under load, stopping the bump-feed action even before heat becomes a problem. Feed the ends through the eyelets cleanly and confirm the spool rotates as it should before you start the engine.

That does not mean any head is maintenance-free. Grass sap, dust, wet clippings and hard impacts still take their toll. But a simpler line-loading system removes one of the main causes of melted line before it starts.
Cut smarter in tough grass and brush
A clean head and fresh line will only go so far if the cutting technique is working against you. For ordinary lawn edging and light weeds, use a steady sweep and cut a small amount at a time. Keep the head just above the ground rather than scalping soil, stones and roots.
For knee-high grass or thicker growth, start at the top and work down in layers. This stops the head from swallowing a full clump of material at once. It also gives the engine and line a better chance to keep speed up without generating unnecessary heat.
If you are clearing dense brush, choose a cutting profile suited to the job and take shorter passes. Heavy-duty line can handle more punishment, but it is not indestructible. Slow down around wire, hidden timber, pavers and metal fence posts. Those impacts are hard on the line, the eyelets and the gearbox.
Keep an eye on line length as you work. Line that is too long overloads the engine and puts extra strain on the head. Line that is too short makes you bring the head closer to obstacles, which increases the chance of rubbing the housing or smashing into hard surfaces. Let the guard cutter set the right length where your trimmer uses one.
When clearing the jam is not enough
If melted line keeps happening after you have cleaned and reloaded the head correctly, look beyond the nylon. Check that the head is fitted securely and spinning true. A wobbling head can create uneven wear and excessive friction. Also inspect the drive shaft area for wrapped grass, particularly after clearing long, stringy weeds.
Repeated melting can also signal a head that is simply not suited to the way you work. A light domestic spool may cope with edging every fortnight but struggle with regular clearing on a larger section. There is a trade-off here: heavy-duty setups may use more powerful line and demand more from the machine, but they save time when the grass is genuinely tough.
A trimmer should spend its time cutting, not making you crouch in the dirt to untangle nylon. Clean the head after hard jobs, use the right line, and load it without cramming it tight. That small bit of care keeps the work moving and leaves you with a property that looks sorted, not a whipper snipper that is ready for the rubbish pile.
